SUMMARY:Make Do and Mend Film Screening (Free)
DESCRIPTION:This powerful short film\, that audiences have called ‘life changing’\, is full of heartache and humour and shares three real North East women’s personal stories of domestic abuse. The verbatim script was created using these thought-provoking accounts and much of the set\, costumes and props were designed and made together with them. \nThe film is full of North East spirit\, and can help us all to recognise\, understand and respond to those affected by domestic abuse in our communities\, so please join us for this special screening in a supportive environment at The Bowes Museum. \nDuring the film\, you will have the opportunity to take part in a craft activity as you watch. Before and after the film\, you will have a chance to ask questions about the film and domestic abuse awareness\, and also to confidentially access support services if you wish. \nWatch the trailer here – https://vimeo.com/291803088

SUMMARY:Stepping Out of The Box Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:Led by our Artistic Director Polly Turner\, young people from Parkside Academy\, King James I Academy\, Teesdale School and Wolsingham School have created artwork that has been incorporated into our original art exhibition – Stepping Out of The Box – which kicked off at Locomotion and has now moved to Durham University. \nThis original artistic exhibition aims to develop a dialogue and initiate conversations around gender roles and aspirations. It is the culmination of a series of creative workshops in which young people began to question destructive social pressures and explore healthier alternatives together with Changing Relations. \nThe creative process began with a visit to our precursor exhibition – Men’s Voices – whilst it was on display at The Witham\, in Barnard Castle. This exhibition had been created through asking “What does it mean to be a man?” in a series of participatory workshops with groups of men and boys across the North East\, exploring the positive and negative stereotypes that surrounded their understanding of masculinity. \nBut in creating our brand-new exhibition\, Stepping Out of The Box\, we did not only work with males. When we originally piloted Men’s Voices with marginalised teenage boys in 2017\, their female peers had clamoured for a project just for them. A one-off taster session uncovered girls: \n\nridiculing the idea of men expressing sensitivity;\naspiring to partner the ‘norm’ of a strong male provider;\nusing homophobic language to describe boys breaking traditional codes of masculinity;\nanticipating becoming economically inactive due to the stereotype of the woman being the person who ‘should’ take the main responsibility for childcare.\n\nWe have a 6-year history of developing awareness-raising work around domestic abuse and this rang alarm bells for 2 key reasons: \n\nResearch shows that domestic abuse can be linked to traditional ideas of the roles men & women ‘should’ play within the family context\, i.e. the idea that man provides protection but is in control whereas the woman takes the care-taking role but is more submissive;\nAfter more than 10 years of austerity & benefit cuts alongside increases in the cost of living\, girls limiting their aspirations based on the traditional idea that a family can live on a single (male) income may well increase the risk of poverty & associated health issues for a family\, not to mention the risk of falling prey to financial abuse.\n\nThis led us to conclude that it was important for all of us – boys and girls\, men and women and everyone in between – to have the opportunity to consider the value of the masculine and feminine ‘boxes’ we tend to squeeze ourselves into\, mostly without even realising we are behaving according to messages from society about how we ‘should’ be as a man or a woman\, or questioning whether these messages are always helpful or healthy. \nThe workshops artist Polly Turner ran with groups of boys and girls across the Northern Heartlands therefore explored themes of gender equality and identity\, how childhood toys shape adolescence and the destructive or limiting impact that cultural norms and social pressures can have on mental health\, wellbeing and aspirations. \nThe resulting exhibition – Stepping Out of The Box – contains brand new collage\, monoprint\, textile and poetry which sets out to question the relevance\, today\, of traditional masculine and feminine labels\, and the impact of trying to fit into these prescribed ‘boxes’; examining the messages we recognise\, receive and share.

SUMMARY:Panel Talk - Is All Art Activism?
DESCRIPTION:We’re hosting a thought-provoking panel talk\, asking a question which is bound to ignite many opinions – “Is all art activism”? \nGuido Reni’s painting style is sublime\, yet the subject of the central painting in The Bowes Museum’s ‘The Power and The Virtue’ exhibition is violent- a woman who has committed suicide after being raped. This apparent contradiction raises the familiar question of whether art is purely for art’s sake\, or is it driven by\, or accountable for\, a social purpose? \nWe’ve bought together a diverse range of speakers from the cultural sector to help us explore these rich and rewarding questions: \nDr Howard Coutts\, Keeper of Ceramics at The Bowes Museum and scholar of Italian Renaissance painting \nRichard Bliss\, a socially engaged artist who lives and works in Newcastle \nAlison Tweddle\, Learning Coordinator for The Auckland Project \nLexie Sewell from the Elementary Sisterhood writing group. \nPlease join us for an enlightening afternoon of debate\, or even better\, come for the whole day of events. Everyone is welcome. \nFree admission if attending the Make Do and Mend screening prior to this or normal museum admission fees apply.

SUMMARY:Us Too Soundscape
DESCRIPTION:Us Too is a digital soundscape that weaves together classical\, electronic and experimental music\, with interviews from a diverse range of domestic abuse survivors who have bravely shared their stories. \nOur thought-provoking installation will sit alongside The Power and The Virtue: Guido Reni’s Death of Lucretia\, The Bowes Museum’s Autumn 2019 exhibition\, dedicated to the Italian Baroque master\, Guido Reni\, & his female heroines & saints\, which features outstanding work from prestigious public & private collections. \nThe Us Too soundscape is of particular relevance to Reni’s Death of Lucretia\, since this important painting highlights the impact of sexual abuse\, which is frequently a component of domestic abuse. \nWe created Us Too to demystify societal ideas about who can be affected by domestic abuse; who can be a victim-survivor and who can be a perpetrator. Our hope is that self and peer-identification becomes more likely as a result of our work\, meaning that\, in turn\, people are more likely to gain the help they need to move on with their lives.
