Sexual Attitudes & Behaviours
Tackling the tricky topics to remove barriers to wellbeing
Unwanted sexual behaviours of all kinds can have a profound impact on a survivor’s capacity to thrive. Opening dialogue around what is healthy or harmful is essential to challenging damaging norms and highlighting the tools needed to develop equal and respectful relationships.
#MeToo
The #MeToo movement highlighted the strengthening of the collective voice of women looking to challenge the traditional power dynamics, and raise awareness and empathy for victims of sexual harassment and sexual violence. The subsequent backlash indicates how much work continues to be needed to encourage intimate relationships that are based in trust, equality and consent in respect of each others’ boundaries. A core aspect of our work on this theme is thus aimed at prevention.
Support
Enabling (better) support for survivors is imperative and, to this end, we work to demonstrate the impact of harmful sexual attitudes on recipients of unwanted behaviours in order to encourage more empathetic responses and challenge the victim-blaming and anti-snitch cultures that continue to prevail.
Sub themes
Subverting honour and shame
We have developed work that explores the way the concept of honour is used across cultures to shame women for being sexually active.
Calling out victim-blaming
We have developed work that challenges the societal tendency to blame victims of unwanted sexual behaviour and hold women and girls responsible for what happens disproportionately to them.
Pro-social modelling
We have developed work that depicts positive, healthy and inclusive relationships and relationship behaviours to change the narrative around what young people see as normal.
