Care-based practice: creating the conditions for real inclusion

With regular national reports of professionals leaving the workforce due to mental health challenges, it is evident that more inclusive practice in the workplace is needed. We have developed expertise in a care-based approach, enabling those with a range of vulnerabilities and needs to participate in the workforce.

Support

In our extensive experience of using art as the stimulus for learning around challenging societal themes, we have observed the toll this can take on practitioner wellbeing, in particular where the themes resonate with their own, or participants’ lived experience. We are committed to developing and sharing practice, training and resources that enable practitioners and managers to navigate such vulnerabilities.

Prevention

Our work encourages educators, managers and community workers to notice and support those in their teams who are experiencing challenges that negatively affect their mental health. A crucial partner piece to this work lies in helping organisations ensure that those on the frontline of supporting others have the right support themselves to avoid burnout.

Disability Policy

We developed a Disability Policy shaped by the testimony of those with varied experiences of hidden disabilities, around which Associate Artist Hope Caitlin created artwork to visually represent the key themes.

Support Systems

We have developed support systems for those involved at every level of our organisation, including one-to-one and group clinical supervision, enabling our team to talk through the topics we work with and gain wellbeing support.

Staff Vulnerability

We are developing practitioner- and manager-specific training to explore how to safely navigate vulnerability when practitioners have lived experience of the themes they are working with or are holding the emotional load of colleagues or participants who have disclosed difficulties.

Their work is always made with care, kindness and equality at the heart of the project. All freelance practitioners are offered Artist Supervision sessions with an experienced counsellor to talk through the topics of the work or support generally with wellbeing. We are given a ‘check in’ text or phone call to ensure the work was manageable and we are okay after a day working with challenging subject matter.
