Project
Amy Meets Rabbits
A stage-to-screen film exploring teenage relationship abuse and support pathways with a linked learning programme for educators to book or use.
Amy Meets Rabbits builds on the success of our toxic teen relationship-themed play A is for Amy and the Rabbits in Headlights project which saw us develop a series of creative activities to allow educators to use our Sometimes it Hurts stories.
Project purpose
The response to our A is for Amy stage play and workshop was overwhelmingly positive, with educators and youth support professionals clammering for us to make it available to young people on an ongoing basis. This inspired us to create a filmed version of the play.
Since the content led to disclosures of relationship abuse, we wanted to ensure that any learning programme built around the film would also encompass resources to aid important pastoral conversations, enabling young people to “wait well” for specialist support.
We are currently piloting the new A is for Amy film and workshop series with our partner secondary schools and youth groups. Alongside this, we have developed the activities devised around our Sometimes it Hurts stories during our Rabbits in Headlights project into schemes of work for upper and lower Key Stage 2, which are being trialed in our partner Primary schools.
All of our education partners have been familiarised with the original Sometimes it Hurts pastoral support resources, so that if A is for Amy (with secondary-aged young people) or the Sometimes it Hurts stories (with primary-aged children) results in disclosures, educators feel confident to navigate tricky conversations.
Bringing the project to life
Creative youth co-production
Young people from Creative Youth Opportunities worked with our wonderful writer/director Zoe Murtagh and visual designer Anna Robinson to develop the look and feel of the set and costumes for the film to suit the characters in the script. Creative facilitator, Sarah Stamp, engaged them in reflecting on the learning outcomes they would want an A is for Amy workshop series to achieve for their peers.
Filming at Northern Stage
We assembled the original cast (Kaitlyn Maxfield, Maya Torres and Jonny Larman) and our lovely Intimacy Coordinator, Lucy Curry, and were supported in translating A is for Amy from stage to screen by the brilliant Katja Roberts and Magnus Dennison of Meerkat Films, with Northern Stage kindly allowing us to rehearse and film our brand new production.
Developing and testing our learning programme
Having spent time consulting with our education partners around the development of linked learning content, we are busy testing this with Choysez, King James I Academy, Sacriston Youth Project, Laurel Avenue Community Association and George Stephenson High School. Whilst the Sometimes it Hurts schemes of work are being trialed in Copeland Road Primary School, Edmondsley Primary Academy and St John’s Primary School.
