Domestic Abuse

Transforming relationship behaviours for a more inclusive future.

Experiencing domestic abuse has a profound impact on a survivor’s wellbeing, and healthy relationships support individuals to live fulfilled lives. Enhancing empathy for survivors and empowering young people to make healthy relationship choices is essential to supporting a thriving society.

Support

In spite of changes in law and increased media coverage, domestic abuse continues to be an issue people shy away from, leaving those affected struggling to gain the support they need to cope with – or change – the situation they are in. A core aspect of our work on this theme has always been around encouraging and enabling (better) support for survivors.

Prevention

Prevention is a crucial aspect of the work we develop with and for young people. We help young people to understand what is healthy versus what is a red flag, that relationships based in trust and equality are ultimately more rewarding than those based in power and control, and to know that support is available and how to access it.

General Overview

We have developed work that gives a useful general overview of domestic abuse – its manifestations, impact and the more (and less) helpful responses to those affected.

General Overview

Diversity and Intersectionality

We have developed work that breaks down stereotypes to show the diversity of people affected by domestic abuse and the ways that different demographic characteristics intersect to create barriers to help and support.

The Child’s View

We have developed work that highlights children and young people’s experiences of abuse (both in their homes and in their emerging intimate relationships), their coping strategies and the varying effectiveness of adult support.

Our
Impact

“I found the Changing Relations webinar focussing on supporting staff through domestic abuse to be really informative and engaging. It was really useful to hear real life experiences and consider how as a line manager and an organisation we could identify and support members of staff who may be experiencing such issues at home. I think anyone who works in HR or who has line management responsibilities should attend one of these to help provide you with the knowledge and expertise should you ever encounter anything similar in your workplace. I feel much more confident about undertaking such support with a member of staff should I need to – thank you.”

“We needed to hear others’ stories of domestic abuse before we could begin to make sense of our own. We are confident that Sometimes it Hurts will encourage young people to recognise the many forms of hurt that domestic abuse causes.”
